2010 has seen many films on violence, killings, revenge, romance, tragic tales, but hardly any of these subjects fill your heart and soul with joy.Director Tom Cooper’s THE KING’S SPEECH comes as a breath of fresh air, a film that leaves you amused, emotional and throughly joyous.
STORYLINE: The story of King George VI of Britain, his impromptu ascension to the throne and the speech therapist who helped the unsure monarch become worthy of it.
Colin Firth who plays KING GEORGE VI is the strongest pillar of this royal film. His acting is genuine, heart-warming and rock-solid to say the least. An Oscar is guaranteed for you sir!
Helena Bonham Carter who plays King George’s suave and sophisticated wife looks million bucks as the royal highness. She effortlessly walks through her role and compliments Colin Firth’s character perfectly.
In the supporting cast veteran actor Geoffrey Rush delivers a career best performance playing the role of a strong-headed, practical and professional speech therapist.
Apart from it outstanding acting performances, THE KING’S SPEECH has a lot to offer in the technical deptt. too! The scenic Cinematography, the classy Art Direction and the subtle and sweet background score are note-worthy. Bravo!
Favourite Scene: When Geoffrey Rush’s wife gets pleasantly surprised on seeing the KING and QUEEN in her living room… according to me, it’s one of the best scene I have seen in many years… so natural, so dreamy! Awwww
Ratings:
- Direction: 9/10
- Acting:10/10 ( It can’t get more finer and natural than this! )
- Editing: 7/10
- Cinematography: 8/10
- Music:9/10
OVERALL RATING: 8/10 or 4 STARS !
Verdict: THE KING’S SPEECH is an achievement in acting. The entire cast is terrific. A royal salute!
Oscar material for sure!
In one scene from No One Killed Jessica, we see Vidya Balan’s character Sabrina getting off from the Indraparastha Metro Station. You must be thinking ‘What’s wrong in that! ‘. Ok, in another scene, we get to see CWG work in progress on the streets of Delhi. These things pinch to your eyes because the film is set in the year 1999 !!!
Yes! Big potholes like these make NO ONE KILLED JESSICA (NOKJ) an immature, unpolished attempt to show the murder case that became a national movement few years ago.
If you haven’t seen this film yet, then better lower your expectations because NOKJ is an underwhelming film. The trailer looks crisp and mature but the film turns out to be a bumpy and exaggerated ride.
Storyline: New Delhi, 1999. Jessica, a young model, trying her hand at bartending, is shot dead at a celebrity party! Her crime – refusing to serve a drink after closing hours! The culprit Manish, son of a prominent politician, pulls the trigger in a fit of rage. With 300 of Delhi’s elite set present at the party, many of whom are witnesses to the murder, Manish looks all set to go to the gallows. Except, that it doesn’t quite turn out that way! Now, two women, Jessica’s sister, Sabrina Lall (Vidya) and the feisty TV reporter, Meera (Rani) will have use every resource at their disposal to outwit Manish and his associates, if the truth is to have any chance of prevailing over money and political clout.
Now the problem with a thriller-drama like NOKJ is that you don’t get attached to the characters. There are hardly any lump-in-the-throat moments in a sensitive and melodramatic film like this. You don’t feel bad/hurt when Jessica is betrayed. Moreover the 1st half is dragged and the film starts to crumble in the 2nd half. Heartbreakingly sad!
On the brighter side, NOKJ tries to convey an important story, a story that everyone has heard and can relate to. In the performance department, Vidya Balan steals the show playing the suave, focused and strong-willed Sabrina Lall. Not only does she fit in her character perfectly, but also does justice with her role.
Rani Mukherji looks misfit in her role. All she does is shout! shout! and shout! Shamelessly uttering cuss words, abusing almost everyone in the film, she makes a mockery of journalism.
On the technical side, the screenplay and cinematography are strictly average. Direction is replusive! Those close-up shots… YUCK! The music is another bright thing in this gloomy film.
RATING: 3 STARS.. That too is a generous rating!
TIP: Go watch videos of Jessica Murder case on Youtube instead… you will gain more knowledge about this case and save your precious time.
Cast: Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp, Paul Bettany
Director: Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck
‘A’ Grade actress + ‘A’ Grade actor + ‘A’ Grade Director + ‘A’ Grade Locations + ‘Weak’ Storyline + ‘ Poor’ Direction = ‘THE TOURIST‘ .
Storyline: Elise (Angelina Jolie) randomly sits next to an American tourist, Frank (Johnny Depp), on a train going to Venice. The police have been following Elise for two years waiting for her to contact her lover who embezzled over $2 Billion. Not only will they need to evade the police, but also the mobster whose money he stole.
The film has a very weak storyline and almost no substantial matter.Jolie and Johnny both look stunning, but sadly the film doesn’t. Even the romantic scenes are boring! No passion!
Apart from 1-2 thrilling chase sequences, the film falls flat on its face. The plot is also predictable & characters are shallow.
3 Things to watch out for:
- The beautiful city of Venice
- Johnny Depp running on the roofs of several houses in Venice. Beautifully Shot!
- A twist in the climax
Ratings:
- Direction: 4/10
- Cinematography: 7/10
- Screenplay: 4/10
- Music: 6/10
- Acting: 5/10
OVERALL RATING: 5/10 or 2.5/5 STARS
VERDICT: It’s a film that looks like an atom-bomb, but eventually never catches fire! Dull is the right word!
- Student giving his first exam
- Batsman facing his first ball
- Pilot taking his first flight
- Ranveer Singh acting in his first film
Pick the odd one out?
It’s the person at no. 4 for the reason that unlike others, Ranveer Singh never looks nervous or worried while delivering his debut performance. Though many actors overact or underplay their talent in their opening innings, here we have Ranveer who cake wakes through the entire film giving an effortless and smart performance. This latest offering from YRF belongs to him.
BAND BAAJA BAARAAT is a lively, smart and delightful film which has all the ‘dhinchak’ elements required in a Rom-Com. Always brimming with energy, the film never has a dull or shoddy moment. The screen is always lit up, thanks to some smart writing, cool direction and ‘pataka’ chemistry between the leading couple.
Storyline: Shruti Kakkar(Anushka Sharma) and Bittoo Sharma (Ranveer Singh), two graduates from the University of Delhi, reluctantly enter the business world together by creating a wedding planning enterprise, a venture which proves to be tumultuous.
Unlike other teenage romance films of 2010 ( IHLS, BKB, etc) , BBB works because apart from the normal ‘love-at-first-sight’, ‘tu-tu-main-main’,'ahem-ahem’ and ‘break-up’, the film offers an intelligent and sincere story which can be easily digested.
Debut director ‘Maneesh Sharma’ has done a commendable job with his ‘baaratis’ ( cast and crew). The entire film is young at heart and that’s why it works!
With this performance, Anushka Sharma would certainly come out of her ‘taani’ partner image. Playing a typical Delhi girl, Anushka infuses emotions into her character Shruti in proper proportions. Be it sad, be it romantic, be it an outrage scene, she is natural! Well Done!
Ranveer Singh’s character says ‘Biness’ and ‘Biscuut’ in a way that shows his sincerity and ease while playing the role of Bittoo. Always confident, always headstrong, he has made an assured debut. Ranveer bhai, i’m your fan for life! Get ready, Filmfare to tujhe hi milega!
The movie is colourful on the technical side also. Screenplay, Cinematography and Editing are vintage Yashraj style.. ekdum jhakaas! Foot tapping music by Salim-Suleiman bring in the shaadi feeling… Jao Band Bajao!
3 Things to look out for:
- Ranveer Singh- Anushka Sharma
- Ranveer Singh- Anushka Sharma
- Ranveer Singh- Anushka Sharma.. what a jodi yaar!
Ratings:
- Direction: 8/10
- Screenplay:9/10
- Editing: 7/10
- Cinematography: 8/10
- Acting: 8/10
OVERALL RATING: 8/10 or 4 STARS
VERDICT: Yashraj films is back with a ‘band’ … errr… ‘BANG’ :D
If you think that INCEPTION was the best film you saw this year. You might have to change your mind once you see Director David Fincher’s thrilling roller coaster ride, ‘THE SOCIAL NETWORK’. The film leaves you perplexed.
Storyline: On a fall night in 2003, Harvard undergrad and computer programming genius Mark Zuckerberg sits down at his computer and heatedly begins working on a new idea. In a fury of blogging and programming, what begins in his dorm room soon becomes a global social network and a revolution in communication. A mere six years and 500 million friends later, Mark Zuckerberg is the youngest billionaire in history… but for this entrepreneur, success leads to both personal and legal complications.
The terrific screenplay and the writing is the film strongest point. It never misses a beat. The magical screenplay starts from the very first scene and unfolds itself throughout the entire film. There is never a dull moment!
The sincerity with which the Director has made this real life phenomenon into a reel life adventure is commendable. The film goes back and froth many times which makes the audience use some of their grey cells.
Unlike INCEPTION, this one happens in reality!
In the performances department… Jesse Eisenberg who plays the teenager founder of the social giant FACEBOOK (Mark Zuckerberg) has done a worth mentioning job. Not only he looks like Mark Zuckerberg, but he also gets the grip of the character and completely sinks into it. No one else could have done a better job. He makes you believe that he is the real ‘Mark Zuckerberg’ .
Other cast including singer-actor Justin Timberlake also complement Jeese well. The film is fairly good in the technical deptt.
Favourite Scene: When Mark sends a friend request to his Ex-Girlfriend on Facebook and impatiently waits for it to be approved.
3 Reasons to watch the film :
- Strong screenplay and writing
- Superb acting by the entire cast
- The story behind evolution of Facebook.. One hell of a story !
Ratings:
- Direction: 8/10
- Screenplay: 10/10 ( Better than INCEPTION.. Have a bet ! )
- Editing: 9/10
- Music: 7/10
- Cinematography: 8/10
OVERALL RATING: 4.5 STARS or 9/10
Verdict: This one is going to win many Oscar’s for sure. A winner all the way ! Isko nahi dekha to kya dekha
In the opening scene of Ben Affleck’s ‘THE TOWN’ , four men wearing scary masks forcefully enter a bank and rob it. This same thing happens many times in the film with only the place and their scary (but funny) masks changing everytime.
Familiar plot ? Yes!
So, is there something new? Yes! Yes!
Just like Bonnie and Cydle , THE TOWN makes a crime like bank robbery so much fun, but in a less humorous way!
Storyline: As he plans his next job, a longtime thief (Ben Affleck) tries to balance his feelings for a bank manager connected to one of his earlier heists, as well as the FBI agent looking to bring him and his crew down.
The story of the film might sound predictable, but it sure is exciting. The acting, specially by the leading men is the strongest pillar of the THE TOWN.
Oscar nominated actor, Jeremy Renner , and actress Rebecca Hall are almost perfect for their roles. Ben Affleck who plays the role of Doug Macray, the theif who is caught between his professional and personal life has done justice to both his Acting and Directing skills. Supporting actors, like the Special FBI Agent and Doug’s Father also have good roles.
THE TOWN might not keep you on the edge of your seat throughout the film. But it sure has some thrilling car chases, gun battles and explosions. The tension prevails throughout the film.
Technically the film is great. The city of Charlestown ( Boston) is shot beautifully. Moreover the screenplay is solid too!
- Cat and Mouse car chases between the FBI and the thieves.
- The track between Doug and his father in the prison. Intelligent!
- The climax… All hell breaks loose!
Ratings:
- Direction: 7/10
- Editing: 7/10
- Screenplay: 7/10
- Cinematography: 7/10
- Acting: 8/10
OVERALL RATING: 7.2/10 or 3.5 STARS
VERDICT: ”THE TOWN” may not be the best film of 2010, but it surely deserves an Oscar nomination. Watch it, the BAD BOYS are back! ‘
