Monkeys go on Hunger Strike to get Human Status

MonkeysNew Delhi, Kolkata with sources in New York and London: Taking a cue from the success of the demand for the formation of the new state of Telangana in India, thousands from the monkey population all over the world have gone on a hunger strike. The movement gathered momentum late Friday night, and apes, chimpanzees, and others having same genus as the monkey joined in the protests in at least 67 countries. When asked the reason, the head of the World Monkey Federation (WMF), Vaanar Maaki, who hails from India, said, “We have high expectations from the Indian government. Their submission to the Telangana demand has given us new hope that they might help us. Moreover, we are a Godly creature for Hindus, so our chances are higher.”
The monkeys’ main complaint is that although mankind treats them as to have intelligence levels close to themselves, they never cared to grant them “human status”. “The humans in Andhra want division, but we want to join up with the human species. We are more sensible,” howled a protesting monkey, immediately encouraging the surrounding monkeys to start chattering at high pitch.
Maaki continued, “The hunger strike will go on indefinitely, until our demands are met by the International Society of Zoological Sciences. We want the human status desperately, and we are seriously banking on the Indian government to send bribe-offers and speak for us to the Society and force them. We will continue to vandalize the streets and disturb the normal law and order as we wish. You people can’t arrest us because you don’t call us humans. I don’t think you have arresting norms for non-humans.” Tanay Sukumar, CE, 1st Year

Book Review

Chetan BhagatChetan Bhagat is well known for writing some of most popular novels of today. His previous books include ‘Five point someone’, ‘One night at call centre’ and ‘The 3 mistakes of my life’ which have all been best sellers. His writings click very well with the young generation and he has developed a big fan following in India. A couple of his books have been adapted as movies as well. Bhagat has come up with yet another best seller in the form of ‘2 states’. He wields magic with his pen and lives up to his reputation in this novel. '2 States' is the story of a marriage which is as simple as it can get, yet so intricate. The author talks about the marriage of ‘Krish’ and ‘Ananya’, the central characters of the story. He talks about the hurdles of inter caste marriage in India, the turmoil through which they have to go to convince their families to agree to their marriage. The novel grips you till the time their marriage is over meanwhile creating funny situations to read.
In a country like India, marriage consists of the alliance of 2 families and not merely 2 individuals. So, the entire family has to approve of the marriage which makes love marriages even more difficult. The novel is divided into 5 parts which deal with various stages of the 2 characters coming together. The first part is about Krish and Ananya coming together in college (i.e. IIM) and about the blossoming love. Bhagat repeats his quintessential antics of the buffoonery from his first novel but is funny and hilarious. In the second part, Krish has to convince his in-laws to accept him as a son in law. In the process he reveals the habits of South Indians, making fun of them in a subtle but polite way.
He doesn’t even leave his own culture (Punjabi) and highlights their absurd behavior as well, in the third part. The 2 families accept the bride and groom but the biggest problem arrives in the fourth part where the 2 families have to accept each other. This stage is the most enthralling and forms a racy read. The fifth and the final part shows the reaction of all the families to their cultural counterparts creating hilarious moments. The novel compares the north Indian and south Indian cultures, highlighting their good and bad qualities. The south Indians give importance to ‘studies’ and ‘caste’ whereas the Punjabis give ‘money’ and ‘looks’ their top priority. The language of the novel is simple and easy to read and maintains a light and funny momentum throughout. He throws light on the fact that, in India, inter caste marriage is still looked down upon and people consider their culture over their country. He also propagates youngsters not to marry without consent from their families. Readers who have loved his earlier books are bound to take to this one as well. If the direct message is "too many surprises in one bag" then one ought to
read the '2 States' to unravel more. Gurtej Singh (3rd Year, PSCT)
