Scholarships scheme, for the toppers
With an aim to promote excellence among students and faculty of Delhi Technological
University (DTU), the university is going to introduce a series of incentives
for the performers. The university is instituting merit scholarships for its students and a certificate of recognition for its faculty members. This was decided at the first board of management meeting of the university on Saturday.
Under the merit scholarships scheme, for the toppers of each branch of B Tech, M Tech and MBA programmes, each topper in each semester examination will be awarded a cash prize of Rs 10,000 and a certificate of merit and the second rank holder will be given a cash prize of Rs 5,000 and a certificate of merit by the university.
According to university officials these awards will be conferred strictly on the basis of academic merit of a candidate including the fact that he/ she has passed all the subjects of a semester in one attempt and has not scored less then 75% in the academic semester.
Similarly, to encourage faculty members to publish their research work in reputed journals the university has decided to award a prize of Rs 11,000 and a certificate of recognition to every faculty member, who is able to publish a paper in an international
journal of repute having a high impact factor.
In the meeting of the board of management, the board also advised the university to set up a staff college at the university for training and mentoring faculty. The college will conduct faculty development and training programs for both new recruitments
as well as for existing faculty members of DTU and other institutions as well. It was moreover, suggested to set up an innovation fund at DTU with initial amount of Rs 20 Lakhs to encourage research and innovations at the university, both at student and faculty level.

Automobile giant Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) together with Delhi Technological
University (DTU), formerly known as Delhi College of Engineering,
organized ‘Auto Quotient’ (AQ), an auto quiz to create an understanding and knowledge about today’s and tomorrow’s automobiles and to provide a platform to youngsters to demonstrate their automotive knowledge and share their passion will fellow auto enthusiasts. Today’s AQ quiz was won by the student team of Peeyush Kumar and Ghulam Ghaus from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, who will now participate in the national level AQ Quiz competition.
After a written preliminary round, six teams were shortlisted for a Live Quizzing
round, held at DTU campus. Out of the six teams of auto enthusiasts which made it to the live quiz, three belonged to DTU, two were from IIT, Roorkee and one was from IIT, Delhi. The questions asked at the quiz varied from ‘Which safety feature in a car mostly uses SRS technology?’, to ‘The small car polo belongs to which company?’, ‘In which part of a car would you find dog teeth?’ and ‘Which global auto company has plant in Bidadi, Karnatka?’,
to mention some.
Expressing his happiness about joining Team Mahindra in organizing the AQ Quiz, Prof. P.B. Sharma, Vice Chancellor, DTU said, “I am aware that M&M is fully devoted to the cause of fuel efficiency and is committed for automotive solutions of tomorrow and that is why we value our participation in AQ Quiz. We need to embed a lot of electronics & IT in our roads to make them intelligent
to create pathways of Intelligent Transport Systems, in India. At the same time we need to make our automobiles far more intelligent then what they currently are. The future mobility community would demand vehicles that are not only fuel efficient,
but are environmentally
benign, complying
with the highest
standards of safety and sustainability
and at the same time offering the pleasure
of driving.”
DTU has been identified by M&M for showcasing
the event primarily because a number of automobile innovations such as Hybrid Car, Super-mileage Vehicle,
All-Terrain Vehicle andFormula Students Car, have been designed and developed by the DTU (erstwhile DCE), which have won high national and international acclaim in SAE International Competitions. The Mahindra AQ Quiz is being organized in collaboration with NDTV Profit. Those present at the occasion included Mr. Prince Augustin, Sr. Vice President, Human Capital of M&M and Prof. S. Maji, Head of Department, Mechanical Engineering and DTU coordinator for the quiz, who also gave away prizes to the winner.

Workshop on Chip Design conducted at DTU
Freescale Semiconductor, a global leading company in microchip and VLSI design conducted a day long workshop today at Delhi Technological University(DTU), formerly Delhi College of Engineering (DCE), as a part of its ‘Campus-Connect’ initiative. The workshop primarily focused on bridging the gap between world of academics and engineering and technology profession, especially in the area of VLSI design, architecture and applications.
Speaking at the occasion, Mr. Sanjay Gupta, R&D Head, MSG India, Freescale Semiconductors, who is also an alumnus of DCE - 1996 batch, expressed his happiness in showcasing the rich expertise and knowledge of seven member team from Freescale on various aspects of Micro Control
architecture, Connectivity solutions and System on chip design. Mr. Gupta was accompanied by his colleagues from Freescale including Mr. Nitin Singh, Design Manager, Mr. Salil Chaudhry, Design
Engineering Manager, Mr. Abhishek Roy, Design Engineer, all alumni of DCE, besides Mr. Anand Singh, Mr. Manish Sharma and Mr. Amardeep, VLSI Design experts.
The workshop was inaugurated by Prof. P. B. Sharma, Vice Chancellor, DTU. According to Prof. Sharma, “Industrial workshops like these are a valid means of empowering our talented students with the capability of design engineering in cutting edge technological area of VLSI design. This is also in line with the DTU philosophy of equipping its students with the wings of knowledge and industry relevant expertise.” It may be added here that DTU has started an M.Tech. program from this year in VLSI Design and Embedded System.
The workshop was organized by the Electronics & Communication Engineering Department of DTU, coordinated by Prof. Rajiv Kapoor and Prof. Rajesh Rohilla and supported by IEEE-DTU branch. The workshop aimed at giving exposure to current trends in semiconductor industry and embedded systems was attended by over 500 students in the Information & Telecommunication (ITC) enabled auditorium of DTU.
UNESCO Workshop at Delhi Technological University
Three day UNESCO Workshop on “Climate Change and Water Resources in South Asia” was inaugurated at Delhi Technological University (Formerly Delhi College of Engineering) by Dr. Warren L. Mellor, Director UNESCO. The workshop was jointly organized by UNESCO, University of Columbia, New York, Delhi Technological University and National Rainfed Area Authority, Govt. of India. 60 participants from South-Asian countries including Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and India attended the workshop. The prominent experts for the workshop included Mr. Nitya Jacob, Solution Exchange-Water, UNDP; Dr. Upamanu Lal, Dr. Daniel Stellar and Dr. Kapil Narula ; Columbia University, New York; Dr. Ram Boojh, Programme Specialist, Earth and Ecological Sciences, UNESCO; Prof. P. Majumdar, IISc Bangalore; Dr. Sharad Jain, IIT Roorkee; Dr. Sanjay Jain and Dr. Sanjay Goel , National Institute of Hydrology Roorkee; Dr. Nitish Jha, Fellow TERI; Mr. G.M. Shastry, FANSA, Hyderabad; Dr. K.D. Sharma of National Rainfed Area Authority of Govt. of India and Dr. Sujit Kumar Debsharma, SAARC Meteorological Research Centre, Dhaka; Bangladesh.
Welcoming the delegates Prof. P.B. Sharma, founder Vice-Chancellor of Delhi Technological University presented the action plan for the Technological University for mitigating climate change and enriching water resources. Prof. Sharma shared the initiatives of DTU in the area of energy farming, CO2 absorption and conversion into multifuels and its innovations in the area of high fuel efficiency and zero emission automobiles such as Super mileage and Hybrid Car. DTU has proposed to establish a Centre for Water Resource Management for low cost cutting edge technologies for waste water recycling, rain water harvesting and water conversation. The proposed centre shall also promote education and awareness among the masses. Inaugurating the workshop Dr. W. Mellor, Director, UNESCO highlighted the urgency with which the mission Water Resource Management is to be pursued, given that out of 6.77 billion world population almost 1 billion people are without the supply of fresh water and around 2 billion are without proper sanitation facility. Further the rivers and water bodies in both the developing and developed countries have become carriers and reservoirs of polluted water. This requires recommitting ourselves for working together to ensure adequate availability of potable water for human needs and to ensure sustainable supply of water for the agro-industrial society in the rapidly growing economy of developing countries. UNESCO shall support the establishment of institutions and centers such as the one being proposed by the DTU so that the larger objective of the development of low cost technology, education and awareness at all levels could be effectively met. Others who spoke at the workshop included Dr. P. Majumdar who shared the work carried out at IISc Bangalore in collaboration with the Columbia University of New York. Country papers were also presented today by representatives of Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal. The presentation was made by representative of NIH Roorkee, IIT Roorkee, IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay and Columbia University on the R&D initiatives in their institutions. Prof. S.K. Singh, Head, Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, DTU along with Dr. B.R. Neupane, Regional Programme Specialist, Water Science, and UNESCO Delhi coordinated the workshop.
Laptops replace notebooks in DTU ‘smart classrooms’
“Smart classrooms” being set up by Delhi Technological University has resulted in first year students replacing the traditional notebooks with laptops. These class rooms are equipped with facilities for computer-aided teaching and multimedia presentations, a DTU release said today.”The members of the faculty engaging the class of the first semester have been advised to prepare their learning resources on laptops already provided to them,” it said.DTU began its academic session 2009-10 for its new courses yesterday. The new programmes added at the UG level include B.Tech in Software Engineering, Automobile engineering, electrical and electronics engineering and engineering physics.
